Should I Use Oil or Balm for My Beard?

Should I Use Oil or Balm for My Beard?

Whether you're just starting your beard-growing journey or already rocking a full mane, figuring out whether to use beard oil or balm is a common question. Both products serve specific purposes in your grooming routine, but which one is right for you? To answer that, let’s dive into the benefits of each and help you choose based on your beard's needs.

What Is Beard Oil?

Beard oil is a lightweight conditioning product designed to hydrate the skin under your beard and soften the facial hair. It’s particularly useful for shorter or medium-length beards and is absorbed quickly into the skin, reducing dryness and itchiness.

Benefits of Beard Oil:

  • Hydrates the Skin: The skin under your beard can often become dry or flaky, especially in the early stages of growth. Beard oil mimics your skin’s natural sebum, helping to lock in moisture and prevent “beardruff.”
  • Softens Beard Hair: Beard oil helps soften your beard, making it more manageable. It’s ideal if you’re dealing with coarse or wiry hair.
  • Adds a Subtle Shine: Without leaving your beard looking greasy, oil gives your beard a healthy, natural shine, enhancing its appearance.
  • Quick Absorption: Beard oil is typically lightweight, which means it’s quickly absorbed by your skin and hair, leaving no heavy residue.

What Is Beard Balm?

Beard balm is a thicker product that provides both conditioning and styling benefits. It contains moisturizing ingredients, but also includes beeswax or similar components to help shape and hold your beard in place. Balm is best suited for longer or more unruly beards that need light to medium hold throughout the day.

Benefits of Beard Balm:

  • Provides Light Hold: For beards that need a bit of structure, balm helps keep stray hairs in place without making your beard feel stiff.
  • Conditions and Softens: Like beard oil, balm contains nourishing ingredients that moisturize the hair and skin, but it also forms a protective layer that locks in moisture for longer periods.
  • Adds Volume: Balm gives your beard more body and texture, making it look fuller. This is especially helpful for those with patchy or thin growth.
  • Long-Lasting Moisture: Because of its thicker consistency, beard balm stays on your beard longer than oil, offering prolonged hydration and control.

Which One Should You Use?

Choosing between beard oil and balm depends on several factors, including the length of your beard, your styling needs, and how much moisture your skin requires.

Go for Beard Oil If:

  • You have a short or medium-length beard and mainly need hydration and softness.
  • You experience dry skin or itchiness and need a product that can quickly penetrate the skin beneath your beard.
  • You prefer a lightweight product that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave much residue.
  • You want your beard to have a subtle shine without the need for hold.

Choose Beard Balm If:

  • Your beard is longer and requires more control and shaping.
  • You need a product that can tame unruly or stray hairs while still keeping your beard looking natural.
  • You prefer a thicker product that offers both moisture and light hold throughout the day.
  • You want to add more volume and texture to your beard, making it look fuller.

Can You Use Both?

Yes, you can absolutely use both beard oil and balm in your grooming routine. Many men find that oil works well as a base layer for hydration, while balm adds the finishing touch for styling and extra moisture. If you choose to use both, apply the oil first to hydrate your skin and beard, then follow up with a small amount of balm to lock in the moisture and add hold.

Final Thoughts

The choice between beard oil and balm ultimately comes down to your personal beard care needs. If you’re after hydration, softness, and quick absorption, beard oil is your go-to. If your beard is longer, unruly, or in need of shaping, beard balm will be your best bet.

Of course, there’s no hard rule — many beardsmen alternate between the two or use both depending on the day. The key is to find the right balance for your beard to keep it looking healthy, well-maintained, and epic.

Beards best friend.

This is it! This is the stuff! I’ve been looking for the right oil and products for years. And I’ve tried tons! But this by far has the best feeling and smell. When you put the oil in your beard, it isn’t sticky and doesn’t make you feel like you put engine oil on your face! Instead it feels like the heavenly dew from the branches of Yggdrasil itself have fallen and nestled onto your beard making you feel like a true Norse God! I guarantee Thor himself uses these products on his golden facial hair. It is just so light and refreshing! It feels perfect it feels right! And the SMELL!!!! I probably look like an idiot the way I’m smelling my beard nonstop. When you look up Ragnarodney in the dictionary it says “What God intended Man to smell like”. Needless to say, these are the greatest products in all 9 worlds. Truly your Beards best friend hands down!!!!

A great scent

I chose the original scent. A couple drops in the beard and it's good to go.

I would like to suggest something to add to the product line. A leave-in beard conditioner might be the just the thing to bring some control to my full beard. It would be good to have now, but once it reaches ZZ Top length, it will probably be necessary. Maybe ideally it would be something for weekly or monthly use that you leave in for one, or a few hours before showering.

I tried this with coconut oil once, leaving it in for maybe five hours before showering. It did do some good for a few days at least, but it was not an oil that I would want to use when I'm going out.

Classic scent

I have tried products that are too strong and you can almost taste it over the course of the day, but this classic scent doesn't over power the senses. It is all natural and leaves a subtle lasting aroma and is pleasing to everyone around you.
